SCWTAC- ALBERTA CHAPTER Is doing a BLOOD DONOR clinic in conjunction with the annual WHEATEN PICNIC.

Date: Sunday September 19, 2010

Time: starting at 1:30 pm (picnic to follow)

Place: Devon Lion's Campground, Devon, Alberta

(just 15 minutes from Edmonton)

Each dog donating a specimen for the DNA Bank will receive a PIN saying I Donated DNA. They will also be entered in a draw for prizes.

Please join us for a Wheaten blood drive to collect as many blood samples as possible for the. Dr. Jocelyn Forseille DVM, chairman if the Animal Health Technicians program, at NAIT, along with staff and students will do the blood collection at the picnic.

Why do we do this at a group clinic - primarily because of costs. When it is not done as part of a clinic one is having to pay additional costs on an individual basis for veterinary services, supplies and shipping by FED EX. (It works out to a HUGE cost saving.) Blood Donor Clinics for SCWT have been done across the United States and Canada since 2007.

1. SCWT CANINE PHENOME PROJECT - DNA bank at the University of Missouri College, Columbia. All Wheatens can participate. Although Pedigree Information is preferred a pedigree is not required - just a purebred wheaten!

2. SCWT LIFETIME HEALTH STUDY -at the Ostrander Canine Genomics Laboratory, NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH in Bethesda MD. Must submit a Pedigree and other information.

contact Cheryl Purpur assistance to register for this

3. NIH CANCER STUDY, -at theOstrander Canine Genomics Laboratory NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH in Bethesda MD. Must submit a Pedigree and other information.

Archival Information

We are collecting ARCHIVAL INFORMATION from both the Alberta Chapter and the Southern Alberta Wheaten Association (SAWA). If anyone has any information from past years it would be appreciated. The intention is to collect ARCHIVAL information to go into a PERMANENT COLLECTION for the breed. As a starting point we will be asking for:

  • History of the Club/Association (Organization, Newsletters, AGM, Minutes from Meetings etc.)
  • Biography of Individual Breeders
  • History of Litters and Pedigrees
  • Photo Gallery
    • Titled Dogs
    • Brood Bitches
    • Stud Dogs
    • Fun Pictures
    • Stories to Share & Photos
      • Puppies birth to 9 weeks
      • Going to my new home
      • Good Puppy
      • Mischief Makers
      • Stories to Share & Photos

*We are open to any suggestions

As many of our so valued Breeders are now getting older and going on with different stages with their lives it is important that this information not be lost. This will be an ongoing project. With the current technology in computers it becomes so much easier to gather, scan and store ARCHIVAL information.

Information can be forwarded to either Cheryl Purpur in Edmonton or Lana Campbell in Calgary. As information comes in or as we have it available will e be keeping an updated list of what we have so please contact Lana or Cheryl at anytime.
